In the film shadow of a doubt, I like how Hitchcock portrayed the connection between Young Charlie and her Uncle Charlie whom she was named after at the very beginning of the film, they were both first introduced to the audiences when they were both lying on their beds, (time stamp: part 1 02:11-02:22 and 09:28-part 2 01:54) thinking about sending a telegram to each other, it demonstrated the unique intangible relationship they have, as young Charlie puts it “we are not just uncle and niece, we are something else, we are like twins”. When Charlie was lying on her bed, she complains about all the disappointments in her life, and she believed Uncle Charlie would be the right person to change her family’s way of life. Hitchcock made it very clear to the audiences of young Charlie’s emotions and attitude towards her uncle Charlie. Another thing I really like about the film is the one quotation said by Charlie’s sister: “The ones that say they don’t want anything always get more in the end”. (time stamp: part 3 02:00) This particular line was said by Ana at the dinner table when Uncle Charlie was passing out the presents. It seemed that Charlie got more in the end because she got an emerald ring from Uncle Charlie but the ring functioned as a crucial clue of this film that made Charlie started doubting her beloved uncle to be the murderer who the detectives have been looking for, and however, it is not the “end” yet, she got a lot more from uncle Charlie but what she got was completely different from what she was hoping for. I found this quotation to be interesting because it is a significant line said by a relatively not so significant character in a way in which functioned as a foreshadowing of what was going to happen later in the film.
