Our first class meeting is this Monday, from 4-6:50pm, in Humanities Gateway 2320. For class, I would like you to watch as much as you can of Alfred Hitchcock’s The Lodger, which you can find in its entirety on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tbeld6sN8yY
Before watching, please examine carefully the “Basic Terms” and “Cinematography” sections of the Yale Film Analysis site ( http://classes.yale.edu/film-analysis/). We will be having a quiz on the terms in class on Wednesday, so you will want to start learning them as soon as possible. For Monday, choose any two terms from “Basic Terms” or “Cinematography,” find an example of each from The Lodger (note down the time-stamp for each example), and be prepared to explain how that particular technique functions in the film. What does it reveal about the story? About the particular characters in the scene? What theme or idea does the particular technique suggest? I would recommend writing your responses in brief paragraphs so that you are prepared to participate in our discussion.
